Tennessee Department of Health Announces Traumatic Brain Injury Conference
Every year, around 8,000 people living in Tennessee are hospitalized for brain injuries. These accidents result in physical, mental, and financial impacts that can cause lasting distress for the victims and their families. In order to discuss the issues surrounding traumatic brain injuries (TBI), medical and health professionals across the state will gather in Nashville on March 17th for a traumatic brain injury conference. The goal of the event is to discuss new developments in preventing TBI and will be open to the public at the campus of David Lipscomb University.
The director of the Tennessee Department of Health Traumatic Brain Injury Program said that “Every decision and every action we make is dependent on the control center that is our brain. TDH and the Brain Injury Association of Tennessee are hosting this event to bring additional focus on what can be done to help reduce the physical suffering and financial costs resulting from preventable brain injuries.”
The keynote speaker of the event is Chris Nowinski, the co-founder and executive director of the Sports Legacy Institute. It is a nonprofit organization that is focused on reducing sports-related concussion injuries through education, policy, and research. When he was a professional wrestler, Mr. Nowinski suffered a serious concussion that developed into post-concussion syndrome. As a result, he was forced to retire from the sport.
This conference is being put on in conjunction with March being National Brain Injury Awareness Month. Traumatic Brain Injury Program
Established by the Tennessee Department of Health, the Traumatic Brain Injury Program was founded to “address the needs of those individuals who have sustained a brain injury, as well as their family members and primary caregivers.” The program’s staff is available to survivors, their families, and caregivers to respond to questions, make referrals, and provide education and training.
The program also serves as a clearinghouse for TBI services and information across the state. A number of materials including articles, books, videos, and pamphlets are available to survivors, family members and professionals who are dealing with TBI. In addition, “The Traumatic Brain Injury Services Directory and Resource Guide” is distributed statewide as a comprehensive directory of all of the services provided by the state. A toll-free number (1-800-882-0611) is also available if you need immediate information regarding TBI for individuals all across Tennessee.
