Three Students Injured in Bus Accident
Three middle school students suffered injuries recently after the bus that they were riding in to school was involved in an accident. This accident was the second bus-related traffic incident to occur that day in Nashville, and it occurred near the Nashville International Airport at the intersection of Deep Woods Trail and Deep Woods Court. In addition to the students, the bus driver was also injured in the accident.
According to the police, the bus hit a dip in the road and caused the vehicle to jolt suddenly. It threw some of the students riding on the bus forward, and the students who were still wearing their backpacks at the time of the accident suffered back pain when the accident occurred. None of the injuries sustained by the children are considered critical.
The first bus accident happened around 7:00 a.m. on January 26th on Donelson Pike in Nashville. The bus was taking two students to the Marriott hotel for a work-study program when the driver turned left in front of an oncoming car. According to the police, “There was a southbound car on Donelson Pike in the right-hand lane. The bus driver stated she did not see that car she turned in front of the vehicle, striking that vehicle, then careened off that vehicle, then smashed into two other cars.”
Neither student was hurt in that accident, but medical personnel did treat several people at the scene and took them to the hospital. None of the injuries reported have been serious. No charges have been filed against the bus drivers in either accident, but the driver in the earlier accident may be cited for failure to yield the right of way.
Tennessee Bus Accidents
According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, there have already been seven large truck or bus accidents that resulted in fatalities reported this year. Last year, a total of ten bus accidents alone caused deaths across the state and countless more were injured. While bus accidents do not occur as frequently as other auto accidents, the amount of people who can be injured or killed as a result of a single accident can be far more than the typical car crash.
In addition, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released its 2014 “Pocket Guide to Large Truck and Bus Statistics.” It states that in 2012, there were about 54,000 accidents caused by buses across the country. Of those, 250 resulted in the death of 280 total people involved in the crash. Another 12,000 bus accidents resulted in 23,000 people being injured, and 42,000 resulted in serious property damage. These statistics included school buses, motor-coaches, transit buses, van-based buses, and other vehicles that meet the definition of a bus.
