Man Killed in Collision with Nashville Bus
A 30-year-old man was killed recently when he had a head-on collision with an MTA bus in Midtown. The accident occurred around 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of Charlotte Avenue and 19th Avenue North, near Saint Thomas Midtown. Nashville police have identified the victim as William Forsythe, who is from the area. This is the second bus accident this year in Tennessee that has involved a fatality.
According to witnesses, Mr. Forsythe was driving a 2004 Toyota Solara when he crossed over all of the lanes of traffic and struck the bus head-on. He was transported to Vanderbilt Hospital Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. Police believe that given the time of day that Mr. Forsythe may have fallen asleep behind the wheel or suffered some type of medical emergency.
There was no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, and the driver of the MTA bus was not injured in the crash. There were five passengers on board the bus when the accident happened, but only one was taken to the area hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The westbound lanes of traffic were closed on Charlotte Avenue as police investigated the accident but were reopened later that morning.

According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s Daily Fatality report, there have been a total of 261 deaths this year on the road across the state. Of those, two accidents this year involved a bus, and four deadly accidents last year also had a bus involved in the accident. Between 2006 and 2008, Davidson County recorded a total of 226, 222, and 241 accidents respectively involving buses, beaten out only by Shelby County for the total number of traffic accidents that occur with buses.
There are far fewer bus accidents every year than typical car accidents in Tennessee, but the resulting injuries and number of deaths per accident is usually far greater. This is because the sheer size and force of a bus far outweighs a smaller passenger vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, or pedestrian.
