People Injured and Killed in Multiple Car Accident

Two people were injured and another person was killed in an auto accident near Tennessee State University. The accident occurred around 5:40 p.m. at 40th Avenue North and Albion Street. According to the police, the accident was caused by Demond Buchanan, 37, of the Nashville area.

The Metro police reported that an officer attempted to pull over Mr. Buchanan when he was speeding on Clifton Avenue. Driving a black Chevrolet Camaro, Mr. Buchanan sped away from the officer and onto 40th Avenue North. At that time, the officer deactivated his lights and siren, and he did not pursue Mr. Buchanan.

A short time after the police officer stopped pursuing Mr. Buchanan he collided with a white Chevrolet Trailblazer. According to the report, he attempted to pass the Trailblazer on the left while turning onto Albion Street. The collision caused the Trailblazer to roll over and the Camaro to go off of the road, striking a brick building.

The passenger inside Mr. Buchanan’s car was identified as Marlon Burnett, 37, and he was declared dead at the scene. Mr. Buchanan was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious but non-threatening injuries. The driver of the overturned Trailblazer was taken to Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

After the accident, the police found a large amount of cash and marijuana inside of Mr. Buchanan’s vehicle. In addition, there was evidence of drug use by both men inside of the Camaro. Prior to the accident, Mr. Buchanan had convictions for aggravated assault, cocaine possession, felon in possession of a weapon, aggravated burglary, and evading arrest.

Just last month Mr. Buchanan was cited for reckless driving and driving on a revoked license. The full list of charges against him is being withheld until the investigation is completed by the Metro police.

  • Property damage
  • Wrongful death
